Les Amours de René d'Anjou
A noble tale: The enchanting miniatures of René's love story
The literary work Les Amours de René d’Anjou stands as a significant milestone in the landscape of European literature during the Middle Ages. Originating from the mid-15th century, this manuscript’s profound significance in art history isn’t solely due to its artistically gifted and politically influential author, René of Anjou, but also its enchanting and likely self-painted virtuoso miniatures.

René I of Anjou’s life, spanning from around 1431 to 1453 as the ruler of the Kingdom of France, was marked not only by his political endeavors but also his contributions to arts and sciences. He was a distinguished figure in literature and poetry, leaving a profound mark on the literary history of Europe. Among his notable works, Les Amours stands out, adorned with seventy-four captivating color miniatures, believed to be the creations of the talented prince himself.
René’s journey to the crown began humbly as the second son of the Duke of Anjou in 1409, seemingly lacking prospects for high positions in France. However, through astute maneuvers by his ambitious mother, Yolanda of Aragon, René acquired claims to the Duchies of Bar and Lorraine. His marriage to Isabella, the heiress of Duke Charles II of Lorraine, further cemented his connections. René’s ascent to the throne of France was marked by military setbacks and defeats, earning him the reputation of a notable royal figure despite his losses. Fondly remembered as “le bon roi,” the good king, he was beloved for his benevolent nature toward his people.
René of Anjou was a luminary in art and literature during the Middle Ages, recognized as one of the most gifted French rulers of his time. His paintings, especially his precious manuscripts, are integral to European art and cultural history. René was personally involved in various artistic pursuits, following the Flemish school of Barthélemy van Eyck, and fostered creative talents in his circles. He had a profound impact on poetry, particularly in the realm of allegory, reviving old-Provençal poetry and collecting troubadours’ works. René’s patronage extended to renowned artists, and he himself created breathtaking paintings, notably The Burning Bush in 1476.
Les Amours de René d’Anjou remains one of the ruler’s most famous and influential literary works, narrating an allegorical tale partly in prose and rhyming verse. The text intertwines themes of love, valorous knights, and squires triumphing over adversities in splendid illustrations. The mastery of depicting varying lighting conditions, especially in night scenes, sunrises, and dusks, is strikingly evident. The miniatures’ exceptional quality has led to speculation about their creator, yet the charm of these astounding images endures, even amid uncertainties surrounding their true designer.
