Illuminated Apocalypse of Lyon

The wonders and horrors of the Apocalypse

The Illuminated Apocalypse of Lyon, also known as Manuscript 0439 of the Bibliothèque municipale of Lyon, stands as an astonishing portrayal of Saint John the Divine’s biblical Apocalypse. Created around 1450 in northeastern France, potentially in Cambrai or Arras, this remarkable manuscript contains forty-eight full-page miniatures accompanied by Latin verses.

Open facsimile book of the Apocalypse of Lyon (Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon, Ms. 0439), bound in brown tool-stamped leather. Folio 23 is shown.

The manuscript, measuring 30 x 22 cm across fifty-two pages, showcases vivid illustrations, a creation of the Master of the Missal of Paul Beye. These paintings break from traditional illuminated Apocalypses with their full-page format and innovative iconography, offering a fresh interpretation of the biblical text.

Each page features a miniature with accompanying Latin verses, two above paraphrasing the Bible (textus) and two below providing interpretations (sensus). These compositions, enclosed in golden frames, depict John in a blue tunic and red cloak amidst exquisite landscapes detailed with green fields, trees, and water, offering glimpses into the 15th century lifeworld.

The Master of the Missal of Paul Beye, possibly Barthélemy Poignare, crafted these stunning miniatures. Known for works like the Crucifixion in Cambrai’s cathedral and a deluxe copy of Le Champion des dames for Philip, Duke of Burgundy, the Master’s distinct style features strongly outlined figures with expressive gestures and intense colors.

The manuscript’s elegant French Bâtarde script, possibly by Bartélemy Poignare, enhances the text with elaborate pen stroke embellishments called cadelles, accentuated with bright red headings (textus and sensus). This distinctive script, also known as “Burgundian letters”, adds to the manuscript’s aesthetic appeal.

The Illuminated Apocalypse of Lyon remained in northeastern France until it found its way to Lyon after residing in collections like Alexandre le Blancq’s, Maximilien-Charles de Coupigny’s, and Louis de Valençon’s.

The facsimile edition of the Illuminated Apocalypse of Lyon is complemented by a bookcase for its conservation and a complementary study book made by subject matter experts.

This facsimile is a unique edition of 995 books numbered and authenticated by notarial deed.
