The book of hours stands out as one of the most cherished genres of the Middle Ages, encompassing private prayer and devotional books that were prevalent throughout medieval society. Among the extensive collection of surviving manuscripts, the Book of Hours of the Seven Deadly Sins stands as an intriguing example of this beloved genre. Originating from Flanders between 1460 and 1470, this manuscript holds remarkable significance due to its vividly illustrated Seven Deadly Sins, a rare theme in 15th-century book of hours.
Books of hours, also known as horariums, were immensely popular handwritten manuscripts of the Middle Ages, remaining unparalleled in their survival to the present day. These texts were integral to both clergy and laity, serving as vital devotional tools, particularly among the affluent and educated nobility during the Late Middle Ages. This specific manuscript, originating from Flanders, is a prime exemplar of this artful genre, standing out for its rich and unconventional illumination.
Despite the standardized models and conventions associated with books of hours, each manuscript possessed its own unique characteristics. Essential elements of these texts include the Office of the Virgin Mary and the Office of the Dead, featuring specific prayers to be recited at designated hours throughout the day. A distinct component, the Book of Hours of the Seven Deadly Sins, stands apart through its strikingly vivid Psalm excerpts.
Crafted in Flanders between 1460 and 1470, this extraordinary manuscript comprises seventy-five remarkably beautiful full-page miniatures, complemented by an additional three hundred thirty-two smaller miniatures adorning the margins of its pages. Notably, the manuscript’s standout feature is its lively representation of the Penitential Psalms. Seven compelling miniatures vividly depict the Seven Deadly Sins, illustrating King David as he embodies various sins such as pride, envy, greed, gluttony, sloth, and lust, each depicted through symbolic animals. This richly illustrated codex stands as a pinnacle of 15th century illuminated manuscripts, distinguished by its artistic depth and captivating visual storytelling.
