Horae. The Power of the Image
Books of Hours in Spanish libraries
Books of hours were the most popular prayer books among the laity in the late Middle Ages. They are therefore of great interest for understanding the transition between the medieval world and the birth of the modern world.
Their miniatures also provide a fascinating window into the life of the time, since, in addition to religious scenes, all social classes and human activities, from agricultural work to aristocratic amusements, from children’s games to funerary rites, are depicted in their folios.
They are also, in many cases, remarkable works of art in which the best Gothic and Renaissance artists were involved.
This work includes a selection of the fifty best manuscript books of hours preserved in Spanish libraries and represents a notable contribution to the knowledge of these bibliographical gems.
The repertoire includes a descriptive card for each one, accompanied by an explanatory text, an exhaustive bibliography and a rich repertoire of images.
