Civitatis Troiane History

Trojan people: A treasure of mythical narratives

The captivating Historia Civitatis Troiane, residing today in the Spanish National Library, Madrid, as MS 17805, offers a splendid journey through the Trojan War’s storied past. Guido delle Colonne (ca. 1210-1287), an illustrious Italian jurist and poet, is credited as the author of this Latin prose narrative.

Open book facsimile of the Historia Civitatis Troiane (Biblioteca Nacional de España, Mss/17805), bound in leather over wood and stamped in gold. Folio 125 is shown.

This medieval manuscript is a visual marvel, featuring intricate illuminations and vivid historical depictions. Crafted in red and black ink, the text is ornamented with raised gold leaf historiated initials and meticulously detailed miniatures that enliven the events described.

The manuscript likely originated in Venice around 1340-50, showcasing a rich artistic tradition reminiscent of Venetian painting techniques, reflecting the city’s distinctive style.

While many recount the fall of Troy, the Historia Civitatis Troiane uniquely unveils the city’s daily life pre-destruction, depicting customs, pleasures, and the essence of its existence. This Historia Civitatis Troiane stands as a testament not only to the Trojan myth but also as a visual and literary treasure capturing the essence of the early Venetian Renaissance.

Scholars speculate the manuscript’s travel from Italy to Spain during the sixteenth-century Italian Wars. It’s suggested that it was once owned by Alvar Gómez de Castro and the Marqués de Navas. Acquired in 1899 by the Spanish National Library as part of Pascual de Gayangos’ collection, this manuscript continues to enthrall with its exquisite depictions and rich narrative.

The facsimile edition of the Historia Civitatis Troiane is complemented by a bookcase for its conservation and a complementary study book made by subject matter experts.

This facsimile is a unique edition of 510 books numbered and authenticated by notarial deed.
